Title: America’s Next Reality Star
Series: A Reality Star Romance
Author: Laura Heffernan
Release Date: March 7th, 2017
Publisher: Lyrical Shine
Genre: romantic comedy

Twenty-four-year-old Jen Reid had her life in good shape: an okay job, a tiny-cute Seattle apartment, and a great boyfriend almost ready to get serious. In a flash it all came apart. Single, unemployed, and holding an eviction notice, who has time to remember trying out for a reality show? Then the call comes, and Jen sees her chance to start over—by spending her summer on national TV.

Luckily The Fishbowl is all about puzzles and games, the kind of thing Jen would love even if she wasn’t desperate. The cast checks all the boxes: cheerful, quirky Birdie speaks in hashtags; vicious Ariana knows just how to pout for the cameras; and corn-fed “J-dawg” plays the cartoon villain of the house. Then there’s Justin, the green-eyed law student who always seems a breath away from kissing her. Is their attraction real, or a trick to get him closer to the $250,000 grand prize? Romance or showmance, suddenly Jen has a lot more to lose than a summer . . .

Say Hello to author Laura Heffernan!

Laura Heffernan is living proof that watching too much TV can pay off: AMERICA’S NEXT REALITY STAR, the first book in the REALITY STAR series, is coming from Kensington’s Lyrical Press in March 2017. When not watching total strangers participate in arranged marriages, drag racing queens, or cooking competitions, Laura enjoys travel, baking, board games, helping with writing contests, and seeking new experiences. She lives in the northeast with her amazing husband and two furry little beasts.

Some of Laura’s favorite things include goat cheese, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, the Oxford comma, and ice cream. Not all together. The best place to find her is usually on Twitter, where she spends far too much time tweeting about writing, Canadian chocolate, and reality TV.

What are you reading right now?

When I’m editing, I have trouble reading, because I get hyperfocused on things like word choice. I freak out every time I see a to be verb. To get around that, I tend to re-read old favorites instead of cracking open new books. Right now, I’m reading Tamora Pierce’s Lioness Rampant for the ninth or tenth time. The series hasn’t held up quite as well as I hoped, but I still love it.

If you’re a TV watcher, what are you addicted to?

This will come as no surprise to anyone who knows what my book is about, but I’m addicted to reality TV: Married at First Sight, Arranged, RuPaul’s Drag Race, 7 Year Switch, The Bachelor, World’s Worst Cooks, Love It Or List It, Cutthroat Kitchen, Are You the One?… and probably five others I’m forgetting.

My current favorite scripted shows are UnReal (shocking, I know) and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. And I never miss Scandal.

What’s a hobby you have that’s got nothing to do with books?

I love games: board games, card games, cooperative games, competitive games, etc. I meet with friends at least once a month to play games at someone’s house, and several times a year, we’ll rent out hotels and have a big party where we play all weekend. It’s so much fun.

What’s your favorite reading/writing snack?

Chocolate chip cookie dough. I pasteurize my own eggs so I can eat it safely. I also love Cadbury mini eggs – so much that, when I’m out of chocolate chips, I’ve been known to smash them and put them in my cookie dough.

Or, um, I mean…. Carrot sticks. Right.

Tell me your favorite part of the writing process?

Generally, it’s whatever I’m not doing at the moment. J I love drafting, but when drafting gets tough, I long to edit. When I’ve been editing a lot, I miss drafting. Especially now, when I feel like I’ve been editing constantly for the past four months. Putting out a series involves a LOT of editing.

Now the writing process you hate the most?

Whatever I’m currently doing. 🙂 See above.

What are you working on now?

Right now, I’m editing Book 3 of the Reality Star series. I don’t want to give too much away about what’s coming up, but I’m very excited about Jen’s ongoing adventures. I’m also working on a new, lighthearted women’s fiction that I’m very excited about, and thinking about a new romcom centered around a different type of reality show.

Coffee, Wine or something else?

Coffee. Iced in the summer, hot in the winter. Recently, I’ve decided to turn my coffee into comfort food by sprinkling cinnamon on the beans, then adding chocolate milk and milk. Try it. You won’t be sorry.

What kind of writer are you when beginning a new story – pantster, planner or something entirely different?

I’m what I call a “plotser.” I don’t outline, I don’t even write in order–but I usually know where I want the story to wind up. Even if I have no idea how to get there. So far, it’s worked out for me. Fingers crossed!

We all know authors shouldn’t read reviews on Amazon or Goodreads, do you?

I was reading Goodreads reviews in the beginning. I was cured of that when my first two star review popped up. It completely sucked all interest I had in reading more reviews. I know it’s there, but I don’t know what it says. And I’m OK with that. I’d rather just write and read and do a million other things.

Which book do you wish was a movie or TV show?

Mine? J Actually, I just finished re-reading Some Kind of Magic by Mary Ann Marlowe, and that would make a great movie. I’d love to hear the songs written for the book and see Adam rocking out on stage.

Book 2 in the series is coming soon as well… read more about it below.

Jen Reid’s life after walking off a reality show has been great–she’s gone from being a broke twenty-four-year-old Seattleite with no love life and no job to the twenty-five-year-old who got the guy, moved to Miami, and is starting a bakery with her best friend. She thinks her showmance love might be about to propose. And with mouthwatering goodies based on everyone’s favorite shows, her business, Sweet Reality, is destined for success.

That is, until a killer competitor opens right across the street. If she’s going to save Sweet Reality, Jen has to come up with a secret ingredient–like the recipe that won Totally 80s Bake-Off. Jen can get it–if she steps back into the spotlight. Soon she and her boyfriend are out to sea on a cruise ship full of reality stars, including her nemesis, Ariana; her lying, cheating ex; and some wicked producers looking to bring the drama.
