Melody Bitterweet Mystery – Book Review

Melody Bittersweet and The Girls’ Ghostbusting Agency
By author Kitty French

My Review:

This is my first Kitty French book and I’m SO glad it’s to be a series!  I LOVED it.  Seriously… step aside Stephanie Plum… Melody Bittersweet is on her way up.  Melody is a great main character.  Not only does she see dead people but she’s got a group of hilarious cast members by her side and she’s extremely likable right from the first page.  I love that ‘dead people’ is her family business.  They all have the gift and they are all a tad kooky in their own way, which makes for pretty funny scenes throughout the book.

The mystery in this story was awesome.  I love seeing a story like this unfold even though you had an inkling of who done it, it wasn’t until right up to the end that you were absolutely sure.  I liked the ghostly cast as much as the living cast and can definitely see that Kitty has an opportunity to take this series as far as she wants.

Of course there is a bit of ‘love tension’ throughout but I can’t say I loved either of the potential ‘heroes’ of the book in book 1.  Maybe my feelings towards them will change throughout the series but for now they both felt a tad too cocky to be very likable.

This book held my attention from the first page I started last night and I finished it in a few hours.  I almost wish I’d found this series after Kitty was done writing it, so I didn’t have to wait for the next book and could just ignore my wifely & motherly duties until I’d read every book in the series.  But I do have to be patient and wait (HURRY KITTY!)

What I Loved:

-Melody is a great main character, she’s quirky, funny and likable.
-That the book is about ghost hunting and as of yet no ‘vampires, etc’ have been added in.  I like it being just ghostly.
-That it’s the start of a new series.

What I didn’t Love:

-I didn’t love Fletcher or Leo, YET.  But it’s only book 1 so their set up is great for potential growth.

What I thought of the Cover:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the cover!  I’d buy this book based on the cover alone.  It perfectly represents the story and genre of the book.

My Conclusion:

If you loved the Stephanie Plum series, you’ll love this one.  I think Kitty could potentially compete with Janet with this series (because I honestly feel Stephanie Plum has gone on way to long…).  There is such an opportunity for a long series, each focusing on a different ghost hunt mystery.  It’s quirky, funny and a quick fun read.  I think this book could appeal to YA readers, Adult readers, Chick Lit Readers, and Cozy Mystery readers.  It’s audience is huge and I feel it’ll do great.

Melody, Marina and Artie make a great, and hilarious ghost-busting team and I can see them fighting of spirits and solving mysteries of all kind.  They are definitely a combo of ghost-busters and mystery machine all in one.  I honestly think this would make a FABULOUS TV series.  I’d Tivo the crap out of it and watch it over and over.  We need something not so ‘reality TV’ and less ‘crazy’ on TV right now.   If you’re a producer… do it!

So buy this book and start saving money because you’ll wanna buy every single extension of it.  I’m clearing a spot on my bookshelf as I type… (OK now literally…)  Any-who…I loved this book and I know you will too!
