“Merida, this must be so awful on you.”
I spin around when I hear the name and peer through the standing guests around me. Then I spot her, the woman I assume is Merida.
She’s dressed in a pink dress much too young for her aging figure and a big pink floppy hat. It has a Gucci strap placed upon it. Her blond hair is in tight curls at her shoulders, and her matured face is caked with makeup, complete with a shade of pink lipstick. The skin around her eyes was exceptionally tight and I know no woman aged sixty looks that wrinkle-less.
There are a few people surrounding her, and she’s drinking from a champagne glass. There are no tears behind her eyes and her posture is far from depressive.
“It is extraordinarily dreadful,” she answers the man to her left; her voice sounds like honey. “I cried myself to sleep. She and I have known each other for over twenty five years; we were, as you all know inseparable.” She takes a long sip of her champagne and a bit of it drips down her chin, she responds by giggling like a school girl and wiping her chin. “Whoops…as I was saying, we were peas in a pod. I know Edie would never want me mourning her death like I have; she would want me up on my feet, going on with life, living it to the fullest.”
Somehow, I doubt that.
Somebody asks her about the auction and she smiles, “Of course I will bid on a few things! I was a little sad to find out that she didn’t leave me even an album of our trips together but I understand the cause,” Merida nods sympathetically. “She wanted to donate what was raised to charity, she had a kind heart like that.”
I sip my wine as I begin to look around for my ghost, but Edie is nowhere to be found. It wasn’t like I could call out her name either; everyone would here would think me crazy. Besides I don’t want to make myself known just yet, I’d like to stop this auction with as little attention brought onto me as humanly possible.
“And who are you?”
Somehow Merida had caught sight of me and waddled over as I looked around for Edie. Now she was standing two feet away from me, her thin eyebrows raised and her one hand cupped around the elbow of the arm that held her champagne glass.
Oh no. How do I even answer this?
“This,” Merida’s voice is high now, “is a private event with a guest list. Who are you?” The posse that had surrounded her was beginning to glance over and my nerves bounced about.
Think of something Phoebe!
“Uh, I’m related to her.”
That was what I came up with? Oh God.
“Related?” Merida isn’t buying it. “If you were related to her I think I would know.”
Edie! Where the hell are you? I could use some help right now!
“You can’t just waltz in here you know?” Merida goes on, and then looks around at the guests, “I’m calling security.”
