Book Review – Out of Practice by Phoebe Fox

Book #4 in the Break Up Doctor Series

My Review:

Happy Release Week to one of my favorite authors, Phoebe Fox. I was so thrilled to be able to read this book (and early at that) but then again… I’m so freaking sad! This is the last book in the Break Up Doctor Series. (If you haven’t read the previous three, links to Amazon are below… BUY THEM!)

Brooke Ogden is one of my most favorite chick lit characters. She’s a break up doctor, almost by accident and I’d say she’s GREAT at helping others during breakups but as for helping herself… not so much. (I mean seriously, what would the book be about if she was great at it! lol)

Book 4 starts out with some DRAMA! Drama you couldn’t predict but it makes for a laughable, fun storyline.  All our usual buddies are back from the previous stories and are hilarious, romantic, and fun as ever. I just love Ben, and I’ve been dying to see those two on the road to matrimony since book 1… they finally are, mostly.

For me, knowing this book was the last in the series, I was expecting to see all the loose ends tied up but was seriously so sad to see it happen. I feel like Brook and the gang are all my real life friends and I’ll miss them so. The book flowed fabulously though, (despite my not wanting it too lol) and it’s a quick, funny read that you won’t put down after you’ve started it until it’s over (unless you’re trying to stop it from ending like I did).

What I Loved:

-How the book ended for all the characters. You really just want everyone from Brooks mom, to her enemies to end up happy.

What I didn’t Love:

-That this is the last book in the series (I say pouting).

What I thought of the Cover:

I love all of Phoebe’s covers for this series… so freaking cute and fitting of the story.

My Conclusion:

Buy this series… and always with the books I LOVE, buy an extra set for your book freezer (ya know, in case your house burns down). Seriously, over the last year I’ve read all these books and I adore them. They truly are a great addition to Chick Lit, right up with the great chick lit writers of all time.

Since it’s been awhile since I read this book I wanted to post what I originally sent Phoebe a couple months ago fresh after reading (edited as to not give anything away):

I loved the book.  I felt like Brook grew up SO much in this last book.  She had to go through so many things, and things I didn’t even expect.
One thing I love about this book is that you really show mental health as it really is and having worked in a children’s mental health hospital at one time, it’s nice to see the aspect that even mental health technicians aren’t always on top of their game and they don’t know everything.  That’s so true to life!  You really captured the stress people have when discovering their maybe some dementia or Alzheimers happening within their own parents and just how helpless and frazzled that can leave a person.
The growth in all the characters from book 1 to book 4 are absolutely amazing and the transition through that you wrote perfectly!  I love seeing a character find themselves and grow as a human through the trials that everyone in life has and you did that so well!!
Thank you, Phoebe for allowing me to be a part of this series (even early reading! ah!). I loved it and I will read anything you write lady!

When your relationship is on life support, the Breakup Doctor is on call.

There’s no shortage of broken hearts in Breakup Doctor Brook Ogden’s successful breakup counseling practice—if love is a battlefield, then Brook is the cavalry. Luckily her own love life is in full recovery: after a long, tortuous road, she and Ben Garrett are finally headed down the aisle.

But when a local TV personality—and former frenemy—invites Brook onto her show, she’s blindsided live on the air when the interview turns into an act of long-delayed revenge meant to publicly humiliate her. Brook’s an expert at getting back on your feet when life knocks you down, but as the blows keep piling on—with a betrayal she never saw coming and a family crisis that threatens to pull the foundation out from under her—her confidence starts slinking away. With her clients dropping her faster than a one-night stand, suddenly the Breakup Doctor’s career is in critical care.

Brimming with both the sublime and ridiculous aspects of love—romantic and otherwise—Out of Practice is a funny and heartwarming tale about loss, grief, and failure that will resonate with all who have loved, lost…and dared to love again.
